Our Multicultural Island: Tasmania's Multicultural Policy and Action Plan released

Tasmania has a rich history of migration to our Island State. Our Island is home to people born in 177 different countries and there are 159 identified languages spoken in Tasmanian homes.

According to the 2021 Census, more than 81,669 Tasmanians were born overseas.

Tasmania’s Multicultural Action Plan – Have Your Say!

Whether you are from a migrant or refugee background or were born in Tasmania, we want to hear from you about how to build a better Multicultural Tasmania!

In recognition of this rich diversity, the Tasmanian Government has released Our Multicultural Island: Tasmania’s Multicultural Policy and Action Plan 2021-2023, which builds on the achievements of the 2014 Tasmanian Multicultural Policy and Multicultural Action Plan.

The Policy is accompanied by an Action Plan that sets out the specific actions that the Tasmanian Government will undertake to achieve the priorities of the Policy.

You can have your say by completing our online survey here.

Consultation for Tasmania's Next Multicultural Action Plan

Like our current Multicultural Action Plan, we want to ensure that our next Plan is informed by lived experience. In partnership with community partners the Tasmanian Government is undertaking state-wide consultation to inform the next Plan.

Public consultation is underway for our new Action Plan that will set out specific actions that the Tasmanian Government will take to achieve our vision for a Multicultural Tasmania. This consultation will help shape our understanding of what we need to do as a government to ensure that Tasmania remains an inclusive, harmonious and respectful multicultural island.

The consultation will run in a series of phases – with the first phase being a community survey. The survey will be followed by forums and focus groups in the second half of the year.

Please note that over the coming months this page will be updated to reflect future consultation activities. If you would like to be involved in these, please email your contact details to multicultural@dpac.tas.gov.au
